St. Luke’s Shelter is an integrated auxiliary of Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church. The Shelter opened in 1991 as an alliance of St. Luke’s UMC, local activists, and citizens of Glover Park that was determined to provide a community-run alternative to the large emergency shelter proposed for the neighborhood by DC government.

Today, the organization provides transitional and emergency shelter to homeless men living in upper NW Washington, and job readiness and culinary arts training to homeless and at risk women and men from across the District. Shelter referral and case management partners are the Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place, Georgetown Ministry Center, and Miriam’s Kitchen. Our partner for implementing the hypothermia shelter is Catholic Charities. The Shelter receives program support and food donations from a committed corps of neighbors composed of individuals, faith groups, and restaurants.

The Shelter is supported by a collection of dedicated volunteers, area congregations and local businesses who provide meals, supplies and donations. In addition, the Shelter receives grants from local foundations and the federal government’s Emergency Food and Shelter Program. The Community Advisory Council is comprised of individual supporters of the Shelter and helps coordinate volunteers, donations and communications. Members of the CAC include:
